The mattress is generously filled at 33cm deep and upholstered in a striped damask fabric, a traditional orthopaedic cover and features a hand tufted finish for extra durability. The benefit of hand tufting is it pre-tensions the mattress, resulting in an extra firm feel and ensures the generous layers of fillings are secured and stay in place. Several layers of white fibre fillings are combined with extra firm fillings to create a firm and supportive sleeping surface. The foundation of the mattress is its spring system, a 12.5 gauge open coil unit and one of the firmest wires used in mattress manufacturing. Open coil systems are robust, durable and made up of rows of hourglass shaped springs connected at the top and bottom by a spiral wire, known as a helical wire. The perimeter of the spring unit is reinforced by a thick, rod-edge wire that adds support to the border of the mattress.
