Can A Mattress Prevent Snoring?

Loud snoring is a problem for many of us and can have a major impact on the amount of sleep we get a night. It has been proven that without the correct amount of sleep at night, you can wake still feeling tired, groggy and unable to function properly. This in turn has an overall impact on your health.

Why do we snore

Why do we snore and what are its causes? If you are obese, smoke, drink alcohol or suffer from allergies you will be more susceptible to snoring. Snoring is caused when the airways decrease while you are asleep. During sleep the muscles found in the throat and neck relax however, if these muscles over-relax they then block the airways and result in snoring. It is the vibration of the relaxed, flabby tissues that line the airway that makes the noise.

Where a change of mattress will be beneficial

Dependent on the reason why you snore will be dependent on whether or not change of mattress will ease your symptoms. Persons who sleep on their backs are thought to snore more than those who sleep on their sides. If you are this category of snorer then a change in mattress may improve your symptoms.

If you are prone to snoring it is best not to lie on your back as this increases the chancer of snoring. The reason being that your weight pushes down on your airways, thus allowing the muscles of your face, neck and chest to push down on your throat.

If your mattress is too soft or if your springs are no longer sturdy then it is not supporting your weight correctly. Without the required amount of support your spine and neck muscles will distort in such a way that you will snore.

To ensure that you are correctly supported a memory foam mattress is the ideal choice. With this mattress your whole body is evenly supported.

An allergy snorer or respiratory allergy sufferer has nasal hypersensitivity which results in trouble in breathing particularly at night. The cause of this type of snoring is due to dust particles, feather pillows, and bedding, house dust mites. As a result of the nasal lining being inflamed it restricts breathing and our body natural reaction is to breathe through our mouth. If you breathe through your mouth you are guaranteed to snore.

Again with a memory foam mattress it could improve your symptoms. The materials used in the construction of memory foam mattresses are hypo-allergenic with anti-microbial properties. These prevent the house dust mite from being able to live in the mattress as it takes away its natural breathing and feeding ground.
