Mattresses - The Sex Factor

We all know that it is not just sleeping that we will be doing on our mattress. Other activities may include reading, watching television and of course love making!!

When you go into a store to choose your mattress a question you might not feel comfortable to broach with your sales person is "Is it comfortable for Sex? Will it affect my sex life?" Problem solved we have done some research on this subject and are pleased to report our findings below. We hope this additional information will be of assistance when choosing your mattress. After all if we could know the answer to this question it could completely alter our choice of mattress, ultimately if the sex is not going to be enjoyable on our choice of mattress do we really want it?

Memory Foam

It is universally agreed that a Memory Foam mattress provides the most comfortable sleeping surface on the market and is the preferred choice amongst many bed owners. But the jury is still divided on how good it is to make love on! Whilst some people love it, others have found that the movement capturing features of a foam bed just hinder their performance. No man wants to be in this predicament!

The construction of Memory Foam is to prevent movement throughout the whole mattress thereby if one person is a restless sleeper the other occupant of the bed is not disturbed and thereby has a restful nights sleep. Because of this very construction it makes sex feel different and a lot of people do not enjoy the sensation as much on a memory foam mattress or topper.

There are positives for Memory Foam being:

  1. Fewer pressure points, so you don't run the risk of getting sore elbows, knees, hands, back or have limbs go to sleep.
  2. Everybody will feel extremely comfortable on Memory Foam.
  3. It is obviously quiet as there are no springs to sound out any tell tale noises.
  4. You do not expel unnecessary energy as there is no bounce. Many individuals have reported climaxing much earlier when making love on a Memory Foam mattress.
  5. The need to have something to hold onto for fear of slipping is eliminated as you will stay put on Memory Foam.
  6. Can withstand continuous use over several years without breaking, sagging or loosing comfort and support.

Now to look at the drawbacks of Memory Foam and these are:

  1. Because of the construction of Memory Foam, it alters with body temperature and as your body will heat up during sex it may make the mattress too soft, this is often referred to as a marshmallow/sand feeling.
  2. The foam has the ability to absorb motion thereby hindering your movements and making it more difficult to move easily.

If you are an energetic couple and enjoy a lot of movement it might make it feel like you are being forced to stay put.

As previously mentioned people are divided on Memory Foam. Sixty percent of owners are happy with their mattress for the purpose of making love whilst forty per cent just do not think it is up to the job!!

Latex

Similar to the Memory Foam mattress is the Latex mattress however, this is a more environmental friendly choice and also a cheaper option.
The latex mattress has similar advantages to the Memory Foam mattress:

  1. No pressure points to hurt/damage the body.
  2. Extremely comfortable.
  3. Silent no noise produced by any movement in the mattress.
  4. No wasted energy and quicker climaxing.
  5. Provides a non-slip surface.
  6. Can withstand continuous use for extended periods without any damage being caused to the mattress.

The predominant difference is with regard to the heat issue. In a Latex mattress they do not tend to heat up as much as Memory ones.

Innerspring

The next mattress to consider is an Innerspring mattress. These types of mattress have always been around and if they did the job for our parents and grandparents then shouldn't they be adequate for us?
Well in a study done by a leading American bed manufacturing company they have said that innerspring is best!! and is backed by 68% of people surveyed. To substantiate this claim they say that inner springs return 94% of the energy applied to them. Bounce per bounce they are better is the claim and this is due to the active support of the inner springs.

  1. In their defence innerspring mattresses are easy to move around on. A firmer mattress will prevent sinking in therefore, making them more suitable for active sex.
  2. Innerspring mattresses can be bouncy when moved on as opposed to being rigid. The bouncing can assist people in getting into the rhythm. However, if you have a thick memory foam topper this could hinder the effect.
  3. They are somewhat comfortable when making love. There should be only minimal pressure on your body parts such as hands, knees and elbows. This will avoid pain or discomfort.

On the negative side there are some some points to consider.

  1. Innerspring mattresses are not always durable, they have a tendency to sag and lose support and comfort over time. They are the most common type of mattress to have durability issues.
  2. They are not silent due to the coil construction which, can cause squeaking as they do not absorb motion. Not the best choice if discretion is an issue.
  3. Although the Innerspring Mattress will assist with rhythm and speed it also wastes a lot of your energy and effort. You push down but the mattress pushes back at you, this prevents you getting close to your partner. This in turn means you have to push harder to achieve a level of concentration.
Waterbeds

They became extremely popular in the 1960's and were sold to us by the advertisers as "frolic beds". The claim was there was nothing comparable to having sex in a Waterbed. To make love in a Waterbed is completely different to making love in a traditional bed.

Firstly it is important to choose the right Waterbed. If your preference is wild, exciting and active sex then you should consider a Waterbed with hand-sides and a sloshy mattress. On the other-hand a firmer bed is more suited to slower and more sensual love making.

As it is a different experience your whole approach needs to be looked at and perhaps reworked.

Firstly you should let the heated warm water in the bed relax both you and your partner during foreplay. Because of the warm water it can stimulate your blood circulation and get your bodies more prepared for a sexual experience.

What previously worked for you may not work in a Waterbed. It is best to practice moving about on the waterbed and take note of how the bed responds to your actions.

It will be necessary to experiment and practice with different positions to see what works best for you and your partner. Something to remember is that it is a lot more difficult to achieve leverage on a Waterbed regardless of who is on top! However, if you place a firm pillow under each of your knees it can assist in providing leverage.

You will need to achieve the rhythm of the bed and then utilise it for your benefit. It has been said that when you have sex in a Waterbed that for every movement you make you get two free!!

Allow the water to increase your sexual pleasure.

Now the big don't of a Waterbed is not to wear any high-heels, sharp objects or use anything in your sexual play that could pierce the bed. Waterbeds can puncture and leak.

Summary

That has covered all the main mattress types and hopefully given you an over view of what you should think about before you buy. The conclusion that we have come to is that it is personal preference. What works for some does not work for others.
We hope the information is useful and will be of some assistance when choosing a mattress.
